Twelve months have passed swiftly since I first took up the Chairmanship of the Construction Industry Council (CIC) in 2016. The work I have been involved in over the past twelve months led me to a deeper understanding of the services delivered by CIC as well as a better comprehension of what the industry expects of us and our responsibilities to them.
Mr. TO Wing, Christopher joined CIC in 2008 and had been the Executive Director of CIC for many years. I take this opportunity to thank Mr. To for laying a well-established foundation and framework for us to work on and I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
With concerted efforts from our colleagues, CIC had achieved fruitful results in 2016 and is now working towards new initiatives in various aspects.
Reform on Training
I have said on many occasions that training is the "top priority" amongst the services delivered by CIC.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Members and our colleagues, the Review on Training will soon be completed. We hope that our training will be able to meet the needs of the industry and to nurture a new generation of smart workers to ensure the sustainable development of the construction industry.
Training forms part of education and therefore our training must align with the education system in Hong Kong.
Construction Industry Sports and Volunteering Programme
Hong Kong construction workers are employed on a daily basis. This practice has caused many undesirable consequences, one of which is that construction workers are not entitled to the benefits and care enjoyed by monthly paid employees.
In order to improve the quality of life of construction workers and cultivate a caring culture in the construction industry, CIC has launched the Construction Industry Sports and Volunteering Programme (CISVP). The programme has received wide recognition from the community and support from the construction industry. The CISVP programme has achieved its initial target in improving the image of the construction industry.
CIC trains more than 4,000 new blood for the industry every year. These graduates will be the pioneers to promote this new culture and a fresh image of the industry.
We Build
We have created a slogan “We Build” to promote CISVP. “We Build” means that CISVP is designed for the construction industry and all construction workers are welcome to join.
The year 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of CIC. While we celebrate our glorious achievements in the past, we are also prepared for the development and challenges ahead.
My dear fellow colleagues, the success of CIC depends on your contribution and dedication from each and every one of you.
“We Build” for the future of the Hong Kong construction industry!
Chan Ka-kui
Chairman, Construction Industry Council
